IBM’s new microprocessor features enhanced virtualization capabilities

IBM’s POWER6 features industry-leading virtualization features that allow multiple servers & processor to act as one fluid pool of computing resources.

The newest System i & System p servers with POWER6 technology support up to 10 virtual machines per processor, in increments as small as 1/100th of the processor. This granular control of computing resources allows administrators to size virtual machines to fit their applications more precisely.

The new POWER hypervisor firmware prioritizes virtualization, and enables processor & memory resources to be shared among shared & dedicated environments.

Live Partition Mobility

The new Live Partition Mobility feature in the POWER6 systems enables workloads to be transferred from one server to another while it is running. Designed to simplify migrations, it automatically replicates memory pages to eliminate data loss and disruption of mission-critical applications.

Dynamically Reallocate Resources

In addition to being able to divide compute resources for various open environments & platforms, resources with the shared environment can be reallocated & reassigned in real-time, without downtime. This enables users to respond to spikes in demand, dynamically adjusting computing resources, including memory & I/O configurations for various applications within the virtualized environment.
