Disk mirroring is the copying of entire volumes to physically separate disks. Mirroring is performed with the data remotely replicating offsite for disaster recovery solutions. For recovery purposes, a mirrored disk can be used to start an application or database server instantly. Also, mirroring can be used for handling planned outages and improving local access to data.
In addition, since the mirrored disk provides a complete separate copy of a storage volume, message store, or dataset, mirroring can also offer protection against primary storage device failure, switching over to the mirrored copy seamlessly. If the disaster is abrupt and unplanned, mirroring can also maintain transactional integrity.
North American Systems International offers solutions with different methods of mirroring:
Asynchronous mirroring - sends data packets ahead of acknowledgement from the secondary storage device, maximizing performance
Synchronous mirroring - doesn't send data until the secondary storage device acknowledges the additional packets of data as well, maximizing reliability and accuracy
