The Power Series 595 was designed to provide enterprises with the highest levels of RAS for mission-critical applications. Beyond the standard RAS options included in the POWER6 systems, the Power 595 models includes the following RAS features:
The IBM Power 595 scales up to 64-cores of POWER6 processors, assembled in MCMs (Multichip Modules), which contain a dual-core processor chip, 4MB of L2 cache per core, and 32MB of L3 cache in a compact area. The Power 595 starts at an initial 8-core configuration, and additional processing is provided by adding processor “books”. These processor books allow the Power 595 to scale to a 64-core SMP configuration. Each book includes 4 dual-core MCMs, 32 DIMMs for memory, 4 x I/O ports, and dual service processors for maximum reliability and availability.
The frame-based form factor of the Power 595 servers allow up to three I/O drawers to be added to the initial system frame. Each I/O drawer includes 20 PCI-X slots (14 x PCI-X 2.0, 6 PCI-X) and 16 hot-swappable disk bays for 4.8TB of storage. Additional I/O drawers can be added to the system with up to 2 additional expansion system frames, for a total of 29 I/O drawers, with 480 SCSI disk bays for 144TB internal storage, and 600 PCI-X slots.
The CoD capabilities of the Power 595 enable businesses to have processing and memory resources put on standby and instantly active in granular increments. Active processors in one processor units, or memory in 1GB units as needed.
Trial CoD - test additional capabilities in a 30-day trial
On/Off CoD - turn capabilities on and off on a day-to-day basis to accommodate spikes in usage (month-end, year-end, etc.)
Capacity Upgrade On Demand - enable additional computing capabilities permanently
Utility CoD enables processor to be activated on a minute-by-minute basis, further maximizing flexibility.
Virtualization is the technology that drives consolidation of multiple workloads onto a single system that minimizes ongoing costs, and the IBM Power 595 system is designed to run multiple operating systems simultaneously, to enable data center consolidation projects.
The POWER Hypervisor™ enables advanced virtualization technologies like LPAR, dynamic LPAR, and virtual LAN, allowing computing resources to be intelligently provisioned on-the-fly. Computing resources can be transparently shared across partitions, increasing system utilization while ensuring applications are provisioned with the resources they need to operate according to business requirements.
The optional PowerVM™ Standard Edition software takes virtualization a step further, with the following capabilities:
Virtualization can be further enhanced with PowerVM Enterprise Edition, which adds on the Live Partition Mobility (LPM) feature, which allows partitions to be moved from one server to another without impacting the applications running on the partition.
The IBM Power 595 system features an ultra-dense 24” system frame to enable large-scale consolidation with growth capabilities, allowing data center floorspace to be conserved.
IBM’s unique EnergyScale™ technology helps control cooling and power costs associated with operating the Power 595 servers, without affecting systems and application performance or flexibility. Management can further understand peak requirements, as well as power and cooling usage throughout the system with deeply integrated power and thermal monitoring.
The IBM Power 595 features an enhanced airflow design to help conserve energy, and include a wide variety of other power management features that help bolster the power savings experienced by consolidating on a platform with enhanced virtualization capabilities to maximize system utilization and reduce redundancies.
