HP-UX 11i offers many standard features for excellent single-system availability. These features include dynamic kernel tuning without system restart, online component replacement, and automatic detection and de-allocation of at-risk components. In addition, HP-UX 11i has a complete suite of high-availability products and integrated technologies and services to ensure that your business operates continuously and reliably when, where, and how you need it.

Single-System Availability: Standard Features

  • Kernel hardened against system panics and failures
  • Dynamically tunable kernel parameters without system reboots
  • Options for fast system boot
  • Error-correcting circuitry (ECC) to detect and correct single-bit parity errors on-the-fly with no system interruption
  • Online replacement of fans, power supplies, I/O cards, memory, peripherals, and CPUs without system shutdown
  • System management products such as Event Monitoring Service (EMS), which monitors critical system resources and alerts system’s administration in a variety of ways if a system resource fails or drops below a critical threshold
  • Integration of ECC logging with system management monitoring capabilities to take a resource offline if the component is deemed to be at risk of experiencing a catastrophic unrecoverable event that would bring the system down
  • VERITAS File System for HP-UX (HP OnlineJFS), providing fast file system recovery in the event of system failure as well as online file system administration
  • Online disk storage management (HP LVM or base VERITAS Volume Manager for HP-UX)

Multi-System Availability

HP-UX 11i offers a complete suite of high-availability products and integrated infrastructure technologies and services to provide the next level of systems availability for business-critical applications:

  • HP MC/Serviceguard, HP’s premier clustering solution that quickly
detects failures and automatically restores application services
while protecting the integrity of the data in the process
  • Disaster-tolerant products and solutions for business continuity
  • VERITAS Online Journaled File System for HP-UX (HP OnlineJFS)
    providing online file system administration
  • Autoport aggregation for fault-tolerant LAN connections
  • Serviceguard extension for Oracle RAC (Real Application Clusters)
  • Disk mirroring (HP Mirrordisk/UX) or VERITAS Volume Manager for HP-UX
  • Enterprise Master Cluster Tool Kit

Business Continuity

A disaster-like condition can mean much more than a temporary loss of computing power. Work delays, data degradation, and data loss quickly translate into lost revenue, lost profits, and lost customers. While many high availability (HA) solutions minimize the risk of any single component failure, they are not immune from disasters such as fire or flood, which can render entire data centers or businesses inoperable.

Disaster Recovery

To keep your business operations running continuously, HP provides a range of solutions that address varying levels of disaster protection requirements. Utility pricing and instant capacity on demand (Pay per Use and iCOD), manageability, and high availability products combine to provide an industry-leading low cost of entry for business continuity.

Clusters

  • extended campus cluster — creates high-availability enterprise clusters with HP-UX enterprise servers located up to 100 kilometers (60 miles) apart with DWDM (Dense Wave Division Multiplexing) support, offering protection from data and service interruption.
  • hp metrocluster — reduces business downtime to minutes in the event of system failures or disasters. Each HP Metrocluster solution creates a single, highly manageable high-availability cluster with up to 16 HP-UX enterprise servers located up to 100 kilometers (60 miles) apart, integrating HP MC/Serviceguard cluster technology with HP Continuous Access XP or EMC’s Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF) data replication solutions
  • hp continental clusters — offers fast, simple data recovery between two data centers located anywhere on the planet—offering protection against data loss and service interruption, even during the most severe catastrophes

Oracle Real Application Clusters Guard (Oracle RAC Guard)

Provides faster detection and failover at the database level. RAC Guard is optimized for availability and runs in a primary/secondary configuration—where all clients access the database through the primary instance, and the secondary instance is ready to provide backup services if the primary instance fails. Oracle RAC Guard (formerly OPFS), originally co-developed by HP and Oracle,
is an add-on product for Oracle9i RAC and is included in Oracle9i. For HP-UX, both 9i RAC and 9i RAC Guard are supported and require HP Serviceguard Extension for RAC. Oracle RAC Whitepaper (.pdf)

VERITAS File System for HP-UX (HP OnlineJFS)

Provides online file system administration and is included in the HP-UX 11i Enterprise operating environment. A “lite” version, base VERITAS File System for HP-UX (HP JFS), provides the underlying journaled file system for faster file system recovery and is included in the HP-UX 11i operating environment.

VERITAS Volume Manager for HP-UX

Provides online disk storage management, various RAID technologies (including mirroring and striping) for performance and availability, and dynamic multipathing for performance. It is accessed through an easy-to-use online GUI. A “lite” version, base VERITAS Volume Manager HP-UX, is included in the HP-UX 11i operating environment.

Autoport Aggregation

An add-on capability that allows multiple networking links to appear as one networking link, thus increasing capacity and providing redundancy. If one of the links fails in a group of links that have been autoport aggregated, the load automatically and transparently switches to the remaining good links.
