Mirroring provides a complete separate copy of a storage volume, message store, or dataset. Mirroring provides protection from hardware failure, because if the primary storage device fails, you can switch over and run from the data in the mirrored copy.
Mirroring is often employed for disaster recovery solutions, and FalconStor provides two types of mirroring with IPStor:
Asychronous mirroring - sends data packets ahead of acknowledgement from the secondary storage device, performing fast mirroring
Synchronous mirroring - doesn't send data until the secondary storage device acknowledges the additional packets of data. Slower, but very reliable.
