FalconStor VTL software is designed to help enterprises meet their backup windows. With a single FalconStor VTL node, aggregate backup speeds of 1.5Gbps are achievable enabling up to 5TB per hour to be backed up.
By clustering up to 8 FalconStor VTL nodes together, performance scales up to 12Gbps in a single logical unit, for up to 43TB per hour across the backup environment. FalconStor VTL software supports the latest high-speed networking protocols including 8Gbps FC and 10Gbps Ethernet.
In addition to boasting fast backup speeds, FalconStor’s VTL includes read-ahead technology that enables data to be restored quickly, even through the global deduplication repository.
FalconStor’s VTL technology seamlessly integrates with, and is certified on all of the major backup software packages, includes Symantec NetBackup, and support different methodologies like OST and NDMP. In addition, open systems backup is supported across Windows, Linux, Netware, and even IBM iSeries, from a single, unified platform.
The FalconStor VTL software includes emulation capabilities for up to 50 different tape libraries and 30 tape drive formats so it can be transparently integrated into existing backup operations without re-engineering or disruption.
The management software of FalconStor VTL includes a number of enhancements designed to maximize the manageability of your backup architecture, include command line functionality, SNMP, reporting (real-time and historical), alerts via email, and group-based policy management.
FalconStor VTL backup technology includes data deduplication. To eliminate unneeded duplicate data, FalconStor VTL starts reading virtual tape cartridges and determines the backup format, and then begins assigning unique data identifiers to blocks of data, and stores a single copy of each block of data. This maximizes the amount of data that can be stored on faster disk backup, without having to worry about the dependability and recoverability issues associated with tape-based restore. The FalconStor VTL software can be setup to deduplicate during the backup process or after the backup process completes, to optimize storage efficiency without affecting the backup window.
For enterprises with multiple remote locations, FalconStor VTL supports one-to-one and many-to-one replications, with virtual tapes located on FalconStor VTL servers which replicate to the main data center, and the data is aggregated into a single clustered repository of globally unique data.
Enable clustering by offloading deduplication processing with a physically separate FalconStor VTL server as well, leveraging the 8-node clustering capabilities of the software. FalconStor VTL software supports N+1 failover, allowing a standby unit to take over deduplication processing without affecting deduplication ratio, since the clustered architecture maintains a single hash table.
FalconStor VTL technology is designed to support data security, both on the backup media, and during the replication process. Write to tape in an encrypted format with FalconStor VTL’s support for AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) encryption. You don’t need any specific backup software or tape drive encryption licensing, and can be applied to any tape format, since it is handled in the VTL, helping to control costs.
When tapes need to be shredded to destroy a virtual tape image to make it inaccessible, FalconStor’s VTL tape shredding technology enables virtual tape shredding to make the data unavailable even using disk forensics. Tape shredding occurs via a 3-pass data wipe with an algorithm which is specified by the U.S. DOD, standard 5220.22-MM, enabling compliance with security and other data protection and privacy regulations.
