Reducing OPEX with desktop virtualization

Desktop virtualization software solutions help reduce the costs associated with imaging, reimaging, rolling out patches and upgrades, and supporting endpoint machines

With desktop virtualization, desktop support can be centralized, and maintenance is greatly simplified, resulting in reduced costs.

IDC’s whitepaper titled, Quantifying the Business Value of VMware View, reports that organzations that deployed desktop virtualization with VMware View experienced an annual average of $480 per supported end user in lower device and IT staff support costs.

Reducing costs on OS and application patching

With a desktop virtualization solution, patching and upgrading operating systems is a much more simple task. IT administrators don’t need to disseminate instructions on how to install the patches and upgrades, and then follow-up with the users who encountered difficulties.

With desktop virtualization patches and upgrades can be fully tested and staged before deployment, to ensure against incompatibilities. When the patches or upgrades are ready to deploy, IT administrators can install the patches without the need for end user intervention or disruption.

Operating systems and applications can be patched with ease, tested and staged on a test desktop imaged, and then deployed without disruption or user intervention.

Reducing costs associated with desktop image management

Without desktop virtualization, it could take hours of work for the IT department to setup a PC for a new employee. The matter of preparing and deploying a new computers for users could be further complicated if the PC needs to be sent to a telecommuter, a user at a remote location, or a sales rep in the field. The same time-consuming process has to be followed for users migrating to new computers as well, setting up the new system to have the user’s data and prference replicated to the new system usually depends on manual processes that the IT staff has to perform.

With a desktop virtualization solution, new users can be provided with new desktop or laptop computers, with the setup being managed from the datacenter, so IT adminstrators can setup new user images by copying and moving files. The user can then simply log into the desktop image on the server instantly. This frees users to log into their desktop image from remote locations, or on any computer they wish.

Reducing deskside service costs

With a desktop virtualization solution, it is easier and more cost-effective for IT administrators to provide desktop support for end users. Helpdesk staff can more easily address technical issues by simply logging into the user’s desktop image, and then see what the end user is doing and seeing, enabling trouble tickets to be closed much more quickly.

Empowering the helpdesk staff to remotely view desktop image to reproduce problems and provide solutions for end users also eliminates the need for helpdesk personnel to travel around the office and between buildings on the campus to handle technical issues users are experiencing.
