Data Domain DDX Arrays

High-speed data deduplication for the data center

Data Domain DD580 GatewayThe Data Domain DDX arrays are designed to provide data centers with a centralized hub for vaulting and deduplicating recovery images and backups for disaster recovery, remote office data protection, long-term retention, and tape consolidation. With up to 20 PB of usable storage per array, and a high-performance architecture that supports up to 12.8 TB/hour of throughput, the DDX Array series for enterprise-class data deduplication helps with the centralization and backup of data from multiple remote sites while minimizing bandwidth and capacity requirements.

Designed for the data center, the Data Domain DDX Array Series de-duplication solutions provide simple and seamless expandability and scalability of nearline storage. These high-performance deduplication systems operate using as little as 1.6 watts/TB of power, and fit 1 PB into 9U of 19-inch rackspace. Management is also made easy with its integrated web-based management console, designed to simplify administration.

Easy Integration

The Data Domain DDX Array series deduplication solutions are compatible with all of the leading backup and recovery and archival software applications, including:

  • CommVault
  • TSM (Tivoli Storage Manager)
  • CA (Computer Associates)
  • Bakbone
  • Symantec
  • EMC Legato
  • HP Data Protector
  • Atempo

You can connect a single DDX controller to multiple media backup servers over ethernet as a file server, which supports NFS, CIFS and NDMP. In addition, the Data Domain DDX can also be operated to emulate tape libraries (VTL) over Fibre Channel. The DDX Array Series also supports all of the leading enterprise applications from Oracle, SAP, and IBM DB2.

DataDomain LogoGlobal Compression

Data Domain’s unique compression algorithm enables efficient inline data deduplication in a way that maximizes the reduction of data. Their de-duplication technology finds redundant patterns across files, within file, and even across blocks of data. As an example, a presentation being emailed within a team while everyone makes small changes can bloat capacity in systems that deduplicate at the file level, while Data Domain will de-duplicate the common slides, reducing the backup server load, storage capacity requirements, and WAN costs if data is backed up remotely.

Enhanced Data Protection

Data Domain’s deduplication software verifies data end-to-end, throughout the backup cycle. Especially useful for D2D backup situations, data is inspected on-the-fly, self-corrected, & healed as necessary to ensure data integrity. RAID6 capability protects against dual drive failures, and NVRAM allows for quick and safe restarts.

Recoverability and the ability to restore is maximized with Data Domain de-duplication technology. By performing inline detection and correction of errors and constant recovery verification, you can be rest assured that all of your backups are safe with a system that catches problems instantly instead of days later. Data Domain’s unique data duplication software can even recreate entire filesystems if necessary.

Replication Technology

Data Domain helps alleviate some of the costs involved with backing up and remotely replicating data for disaster recovery & WAN vaulting. Its replication software employs delta differencing to copy only unique blocks of data, further lower bandwidth costs associated with DR & offsite archival.

Optimized for VMware

The DD580 is also compatible with VMware for virtualized environments. In virtualized environments utilizing VMware VI (Virtual Infrastructure), replicating the large .vmdk (virtual disk) files and configuration files can dramatically increase backup requirements. Data Domain’s unique deduplication algorithm detects redundant sequences in these file, oftentimes resulting in storage reductions of 40X. In addition, data and .vmdk and configuration files can be backed up separately, so data can be replicated daily, but snapshots of vmdk’s and configuration files can be copied less frequently.

In addition, VMware works well in multi-site replication situations by utilizing incremental backup technology to eliminate the need to transfer data already at the backup site, as well as features like Global Compression, which help to further minimize the duplication of .vmdk files offsite for disaster recovery, and reduce bandwidth requirements of remote replication and WAN vaulting.

Inline de-duplication v.s. offline de-duplication

There are two main methods of implementing deduplication: inline or offline. Inline de-duplication is performed at the host application, or on an appliance sitting on the data path, which minimizes disk capacity requirements, thereby maximizing cost-savings achieved by reduced disk requirements.

Data Domain employs inline deduplication solutions, which helps to minimize bandwidth requires for remote replication, vaulting and disaster recovery.
