What Is RAID 6?

Dual parity support

RAID 6 is a a new RAID format similar to RAID 5, but it adds an additional parity block, utilizing striping with two parity blocks distributed across all member disks.

This enables RAID to survive two drive failures without suffering any data loss, helping to correctly handle bad blocks during rebuild without having to suffer much of a performance loss versus RAID 5. This reduces the risks of using large parity groups.
