Where Innovation Meets Solutions

Data Warehouse Manager

NGS Business Intelligence Software

You might picture your AS/400 on-line transaction processing (OLTP) environment as the water supply for your data warehouse. But you can’t just pour OLTP data into your data warehouse. You need a powerful, high-performance tool that can help you summarize, transform and cleanse your production data. Data Warehouse Manager from NGS can make the job easy.

Data Warehouse Manager is a native AS/400 extraction, transformation and loading solution designed for rapid data warehouse prototyping, development and management. It provides the Data Warehouse Administrator with a single point of control for:

  • DB2 UDB for AS/400 data warehouse and data mart modeling/maintenance
  • Simple and complex data transformation including what-if logic and date field transformations
  • Data warehouse security
  • Meta-data creation and maintenance
  • AS/400 to AS/400 and
  • AS/400 to ASCII data propagation

Data Warehouse Manager provides a graphical user interface, which may be operated from the windows desktop or through a web-browser as an AS/400 Java-server applet. Either way, Data Warehouse Manager delivers unsurpassed extraction and transformation capabilities without programming. A strong business analyst who understands your OLTP database can build a valuable data warehouse with Data Warehouse Manager.

Data Warehouse Manager processes your requests natively, without using ODBC, to deliver solid performance in all types of AS/400 environments. The software can also leverage the n-way, symmetric multi-processing and state-of-the-art indexing capabilities of the AS/400, when used in environments where those functions are available.

Extraction
Data Warehouse Manager supports standard-SQL style inner, outer and exception file joins, as well as joins based on derived fields, one-to-many relationships, file members, unique key fields, and file unions. Joined files are displayed hierarchically to reflect their relationships. You may extract data from both local and distributed databases when OS/400 Distributed Data Base Management (DDM) is in use.

Record selection and new field calculation criteria may be defined in the extraction object or left for ad hoc entry at run-time. CL programs may also be used to pass ad hoc criteria into the extraction object. NGS provides sample CL source programs to illustrate this capability. Data Warehouse Manager also supports full Boolean selection logic and a timesaving copy feature to simplify the entry of complex selection criteria.

Transformation
The data transformation capabilities of Data Warehouse Manager give you the ability to convert numeric codes for inventory items, employees, departments and other business terms into meaningful, descriptive values. You can also convert dates into consistent formats and generate summary fields such as gross-to-net, gross margin and more. Other transformation functions allow you to create fields representing such items as elapsed days and time, absolute values, remainders, integer keys and more.

Cleansing
Data Warehouse Manager has the function to handle many data cleansing requirements and provides Application Program Interfaces (API’s) for customer cleansing programs or third-party tools.

Loading and Propagation
Data Warehouse Manager builds DB2 UDB for AS/400 data base files, which may be accessed by numerous IBM and third-party software tools. These files may be generated in summary or detail as required. Key fields may be assigned to support star schema warehouse architectures. Depending on the object’s attributes, the output may create, replace or append to the designated DB2 UDB file.

Data Warehouse Manager is capable of propagating extracted output to any AS/400 with an active license of NGS’ IQ-Server software. Data Warehouse Manager uses capabilities inherent in OS/400 to achieve high-speed data propagation without the complexity and overhead of a SNADS session.

Meta-Data
Data Warehouse Manager offers extensive integrated meta-data features. Extraction object use may be audited by looking at a statistics file which shows when the object was created, the user profile of the creator, the last user to run the object, the last user to change the object, number of times run, etc. Transformation and selection criteria may be documented via comment fields, which are stored with the object template.

Users of NGS’s “front-end” query, reporting and on-line analytical processing (OLAP) software may extend their use of the Data Warehouse Manager meta-data function to include the creation of alias file and field names with customized editing and descriptive text. These aliases provide users of the related NGS-IQ modules with an easy to understand view of the data base that is superior to that provided by third-party solutions limited to DB2 UDB for AS/400 data description specifications (DDS).

Security
Data Warehouse Manager operates in complete compliance with OS/400 security. NGS offers the IQ-SeQure security management system for customers desiring more extensive data base and/or extraction object security. Security defined in IQ-SeQure is enforced when users access DB2 UDB for AS/400 via any module in the NGS business intelligence suite or with the NGS-IQ enterprise query and reporting solution.
