IBM’s most powerful System p5 server, the p595, delivers the highest amount of performance, reliability, scalability & flexibility for AIX 5L ™ and Linux® environments.

IBM’s new p595 servers are designed to scale with your UNIX and Linux enterprise applications on demand. Delivering high-end computing power, as well as enterprise-class reliability, availability, serviceability, and scalability, the p5 595 systems provide the power for your mission-critical applications.

With the p595 server, you can scale & re-allocate resources to accommodate rapidly changing business requirements seamlessly.

64-bit POWER5+ & POWER5 processing power

The IBM p5 Model 595 lets you choose between POWER5 or the newest POWER5+ processors, which deliver up to 2.3 GHz per CPU.

These POWER5+ & POWER5 chips are two-way simultaneous multithreaded dual-core chips, designed to maximize the utilization of your computing power. They also include dynamic resource balancing to ensure each thread receives their fair share of system resources, these cutting-edge processors each appear as a four-way symmetric multiprocessor to your software.

Consolidate with virtualization and partitioning

Utilize LPAR technology with IBM’s Virtualization Engine™ to consolidate multiple Unix and Linux workloads. With the IBM System p5 595, you can utilize advanced consolidation technologies like Dynamic Logical Partitioning, Micro-Partitioning™ and Virtual I/O Server to maximize the resource utilization of your p595 system, making it an ideal server consolidation platform.

Dynamic Logical Partitioning increases systems utilization and optimization by automatically allocating memory and CPUs to Linux® or AIX 5L ™ workloads that need it most, eliminating the need to spend money on unused computing power.

Micro-partitioning further cuts costs by allowing you to consolidate multiple independent AIX 5L and Linux workloads and finely tune performance. Virtual servers can be as small as 1/10th of a processor, and in increments as small as 1/100th of a processor. You can even run independent Linux and AIX™ workloads simultaneously on the same chip with the p5 platform.

The Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) capability allows multiple copies of OS’s to run on the same system, reducing the amount of systems you need, and saving money in software licensing costs.

Advanced Scalability

Built on IBM’s advanced MCM (multichip modules), the p595 is designed to scale up to 64 processing cores in a single system. These 8-core MCMs place the processors extremely close together, to enable faster movement of data, and increase reliability. These MCMs can then be assembled into “books”, each containing two MCMs.

The IBM p595 comes with 8GB of DDR2 memory which can scale up to 2TB. In addition, the System p5 p595 is packaged in a 42U, 24-inch system frame which optimizes power utilization with a bulk power subsystem. With the p595, you can also add up to 240 PCI-X slots and 192 disk bays with I/O drawers.

Capacity On Demand

The p595 delivers Capacity on Demand (CoD) features, so companies don't have to pay for computing resources until they use them. The p595 COD features are:

• capacity upgrade on demand (CUoD) - if you know your workload will increase in time, this feature lets your purchase permanent additional capacity as your IT demands grow
• trial CoD - check out your unused capacity with this one-time, no-additional-charge 30-day trial of your inactive capacity
• reserve CoD -if your server processor load is sporadic, you can purchase blocks of 30 processor days and activate in full-day increments. Respond to jumps in workload demand, and deactivate as workload demand subsides.
• on/off CoD - perfect for end-of-week/month/fiscal year batch processing and accounting tasks, you can enable processors to be temporarily activated in full day increments
• capacity backup on demand - this feature provides additional computing power to be activated in disaster recovery situations

Reliability, Availability, Serviceability

In addition to the hot-swappable PCI slots and other RAS features considered standard for IBM user that need systems up and running around the clock, the new p5 systems include additional RAS features that further reduce downtime.

Concurrent firmware updates ensure that application remain functional while systems firmware is updates. Also included is a finer-grained L2 cache deallocation function,and improved L3 cache line deletes, as well as ECC cache for self-healing functionality.
