The
p5 Model 550 systems feature IBM’s new POWER5 processors,
which deliver 64-bit computing power and features like Dynamic
Logical Partitioning, simultaneous multithreading, and IBM’s
Virtualization Engine™ to
the midrange server market.
These systems are perfect as a versatile departmental or regional server, and include all the RAS functionality to support enterprise applications. The p550 is also a great platform for those looking to consolidate multiple UNIX® and Linux® workloads on one server, simplifying IT infrastructure. The p5 Model 550 servers are also great for scalable databases, e-commerce applications, BI, and HPC workloads.
The p550 delivers capacity on demand features, so companies don't have to pay for computing resources until they use them. The p550 COD features are:
Dynamic Logical Partitioning increases systems utilization and optimization by automatically allocating memory and CPUs to Linux® or AIX™ workloads that need it most, eliminating the need to spend money on unused computing power. The optional virtual I/O allows your workloads to share expensive disk drives.
Micro-partitioning further cuts costs by allowing you to consolidate multiple independent AIX 5L and Linux workloads and finely tune performance. Virtual servers can be as small as 1/10th of a processor, and in increments as small as 1/100th of a processor. You can even run independent Linux and AIX™ workloads simultaneously on the same chip with the p5 platform.
Available in either a deskside or 19" rack-mounted configuration, the p550 is available as a 1-, 2- or 4-Way symmetric multiprocessing system, and can support up to 64 GB of memory.
You are able to connect up to eight I/O drawers to the server, resulting in as many as 60 hot-plug PCI-X slots. HACMP™ software and cluster-ready hardware allows you to connect up to 64 p550s into a single HPC cluster, for continuous availability.
In addition to the hot-swappable PCI slots and other RAS features considered standard for IBM user that need systems up and running around the clock, the new p5 systems include additional RAS features that further reduce downtime.
Concurrent firmware updates ensure that application remain functional while systems firmware is updates. Also included is a finer-grained L2 cache deallocation function, and improved L3 cache line deletes, as well as ECC cache for self-healing functionality.
