IBM’s new QCM technology delivers 4-core POWER5+ computing in a 1U form factor

IBM offers a POWER5+ server that fits into 1U in the IBM System p5 505Q Express.

The p505Q Express edition systems are ideal in space-constrained environments where servers with on demand computing is needed; without compromising availability, flexibility or security. The System p505Q offers all of the above at a great price.

The IBM System p5 505Q Express edition rack-mount servers deliver attractive pricing in a high-performance system that includes reliability and virtualization features seldom seen in entry-level systems. The 4-core p505Q Express servers also feature:

• 1.9MB L3 cache
• 36MB L2 cache (2-core systems only)
• 21.1Gbps peak processor-to-memory bandwidth
• two Ultra320 SCSI controllers

Quad-Core Module (QCM) Technology

This new technology packs four 1.5GHz or 1.65GHz into a single QCM, helping to deliver maximum price/performance. This unique architecture is also designed to increase system throughput, making the p505Q Express ideal for application consolidation, as well as compute-intensive applications such as scientific and analytical applications like business intelligence.

Scalability

The p5 505Q Express servers delivers many scalability options in a slim 2U package. The IBM p505Q Express includes:

• 1GB - 32GB DDR2 SDRAM (528 MHz)
• 2 x internal SCSI disk bays, for up to 600GB internal disk
• 2 x PCI-X adapters
• support for 4GBps Fibre & 10 Gigabit Ethernet

Virtualization Engine™

The IBM System p5 505Q Express model comes with IBM’s Virtualization Standard, allowing you to utilize the server to consolidate multiple UNIX and Linux workloads on one system. In addition, Dynamic LPAR further enhances the virtualization capabilities of your p505Q, allowing you to allocate and re-allocate systems resources as needed. without rebooting.

Virtual LAN comes with the Virtualization Engine, and delivers a fast interconnect in between your partitions, speeding internal communications to memory speeds.

Advanced POWER Virtualization

This module is optional on the p505Q Express platform, and offers features like Micro-Partitioning and Virtual I/O Server (VIOS). These features further maximize the utilization of your system resources.

Micro-Partitioning lets you define partitions as small as 1/10th of a processor, and changed in increments as small as 1/100th of a processor.

VIOS for the System p5 505Q Express increases the amount of systems resources you can share between partitions, such as expensive disk drives. The VIOS includes the Integrated Virtualization Manager, a browser-based applications that greatly eases the amount of time and effort required to create and manage virtual devices & partitions.

64-bit POWER5+ processing power

IBM’s fifth generation of POWER technology delivers 64-bit computing with advanced features like simultaneous multithreading, which allows you to run two concurrent application threads on the same processor.

Reliability, Availability, Security (RAS)

The p505Q servers are ideal for HPC workloads, and also support features such as First Failure Data Capture (FFDC) and hardware diagnostics, to maximize uptime. The System p5 505Q servers also include many of the same RAS features included with the higher-end System p5 machines. Some of the RAS capabilities include:

• Chipkill™ ECC & bit-steering memory
• hot-swappable, redundant components
• dynamic deallocation of system components
• a sophisticated service processor

The System p5 505Q servers also design logical partitions to be shielded from one another to prevent applications running in one partition from violating security policies across partitions, for additional security.
