The newest IBM System p5 servers are the newest of IBM’s POWER5 & POWER5+ processor-based systems. The newest POWER5 & POWER5+ 64-bit chips are designed to simplify IT infrastructure by allowing you to consolidate multiple AIX 5L and Linux workloads on a single system.
With all System p5 servers, there are various ways you can upgrade processing power, memory, disk capacity or I/O without procuring a new system.
In addition, many of the midrange and high-end p5 systems include Capacity on Demand (CoD) features to allow you to react quickly to changing business needs, adjusting workloads & performance dynamically, and in some cases, automatically.
The IBM System p5 comes with IBM’s Virtualization Engine standard, allowing you to utilize the server to consolidate multiple UNIX and Linux workloads on one system. In addition, Dynamic LPAR further enhances the virtualization capabilities of your p5 server, allowing you to allocate and re-allocate systems resources as needed. without rebooting.
Virtual LAN comes with the Virtualization Engine, and delivers a fast interconnect in between your partitions, speeding internal communications to memory speeds.
Standard on some servers, and available as an option on others, the Advanced POWER Virtualization offers features like Micro-Partitioning and Virtual I/O Server (VIOS). These features further maximize the utilization of your system resources.
Micro-Partitioning lets you define partitions as small as 1/10th of a processor, and changed in increments as small as 1/100th of a processor.
VIOS for the System p5 increases the amount of systems resources you can share between partitions, such as expensive disk drives. The VIOS includes the Integrated Virtualization Manager, a browser-based applications that greatly eases the amount of time and effort required to create and manage virtual devices & partitions.
The System p5 features a variety of RAS features designed for always-on operation, helping businesses create resilient computing environments.
All p5 servers feature an integrated service processor. In addition, memory is protected with Chipkill™ and ECC (error checking & correction) for memory, as well as L2 & L3, identifies and correct multi-bit errors before they cause crashes.
